Komotion for Maya - FAQ

General

Is a licence required to use the Komotion Animation Controls/Tools?

Yes, at this time, a Komotion for Maya licence is required to use that functionality.

For Komotion for Maya, is the tool Y-up only, or can it be switched to Z-up as well?

The Komotion system works in both Y-Up and Z-Up coordinate systems, although the directions for the Rig/Chain Creation processes work from a Y-Up perspective in both coordinate systems. The Komotion UI always assumes that you’re working in Y-Up Maya default, so if you’re building rigs Z-Up, it may be a little confusing at first to work with. We’re investigating improvements and open to further feedback.

With Komotion for Maya, why can’t I undo during bone chain creation, and for some controls and changes?

For bone chain creation process, Undo/Redo is not feasible at this time as for Komotion to build the unique and complex structure in the DAG, thousands of Maya API calls and operations are performed.

For Komotion Controls currently, Undo functionality is implemented in the ‘IK/FK’, ‘Free FK’, ‘Twist’, and ‘Thickness’ controls. Undo can only be performed while controls are selected, and once a control is de-selected, the user will no longer be able to Undo. All other similar controls do not support Undo/Redo, and we’re looking at improving this in the future.

Note: For ‘Free FK’, if one controller is selected during ‘Free FK’, then the user will have to deselect and then Undo. However, if more than one controller is selected, then the user can just Undo as normal.

Sometimes, when scrubbing the Maya Time Slider backwards, I can see an IK jump. Is this normal?

This is essentially just a visual glitch, and should be ignored as it does not have an impact on animation. Anything else outside of that behaviour should be regarded as an issue that can be reported to Komotion for futher analysis.

I can’t set and use Preferred Angles in Maya with Komotion Rigs. Is this normal behaviour?

Yes, users should not use ‘Set Preferred Angles’, or ‘Assume Preferred Angles’ with Komotion Rigs. For Rig inter-op and Komotion Rigs, Set and Preferred Angles, and Assume Angles, should be used before the Komotion Rig inter-op is performed. If either of these rules are not followed, Komotion Rigs may become unstable or break.

Will a Maya 2020 Komotion for Maya plug-in be available?

Due to unexpected bugs and regressions in the Maya 2020 API, we can’t currently provide this plug-in. We’re investigating temporary workarounds and have been in contact with Autodesk regarding this.

Do you offer floating licenses or only node locked?

We currently only offer node-locked licences, though with our current timescales, we will be offering floating licences sometime in early 2020.

When will you offer Komotion for Maya plug-ins for macOS and Linux?

For macOS and Linux plug-in releases, due to limited demand from studios and users, they’re currently on the back-burner. We will not be charging users and studios extra for these plug-ins, and before a public release, we will likely hold a closed Beta.

Keep in mind that if you cancel the subscription, you can’t re-subscribe with that earlier discount or offer. If we are moving forward with subscription plan price increases, all subscribers affected will be notified before they take effect.

Yes, you just need to log into your Komotion account to cancel it. If you re-subscribe, you will be issued with a new licence key that will have to be reactivated with the Komotion software.
